Historically and today, Bowditch Navigation is a leader in providing reliable, high-performance marine navigation aid systems. We are focused on solutions for ship pilots. In 2001, Raven acquired Starlink, Inc., a company that pioneered many GPS technologies, including developing the industry’s first MSK Beacon/DGPS receiver. Starlink and Raytheon Service Company created the first GPS-based portable pilot unit in 1991 with Capt. Joseph Bradley of The Pilot’s Association for the Bay and River Delaware, In 2017, Bowditch Navigation acquired the assets of the Raven Marine Navigation business. Bowditch Navigation continues to foster Starlink’s rich tradition of developing innovative GPS solutions for marine applications worldwide.
Darrell McCauley, Ph.D., P.E., is the President and Founder of Bowditch Navigation. He has over 30 years of software and electronics experience. Before Bowditch, Dr. McCauley worked at Raven Industries for 12 years, directing design efforts in aerospace, agriculture, and marine navigation.
Dr. McCauley has degrees from Texas A&M and Purdue, research experience with the National Science Foundation and Cornell University, and an Executive Certificate in Strategy and Innovation from MIT. He is registered as a professional engineer.
Dr. McCauley resides in Austin, Texas. He enjoys reading classic literature, psychology, and whatever his kids read. A biography of Nathaniel Bowditch, author of The American Practical Navigator, inspired the company name.
